The Calligraphic Paintings of

The Art Gallerie Salon features a permanent collection of a lifetime of calligraphic art by Sami Sunchild.

The word calligraphy refers to ornamental or beautiful writing which in Asian and Middle Eastern cultures becomes the subject matter of the work of art itself. Poetry, prayers, affirmations- all take their places as the subject of the painting

Like their ancestral cousins, the calligraphic scrolls and paintings of China, Japan and Korea, and the calligraphic arts of Morocco and the Middle East, Sami's work presents ideas as subject matter. The words themselves are the center of interest. They are offered as prayers, mantras, affirmations and inspired thoughts.

Cyrillic or latin script is the most widely used form of alphabetic writing in the modern world. Initially Sami emulated the calligraphy of China, Japan, Korea, modifiying our latin characters with the feel of asian brushstrokes. These early paintings evolved over the years into countless versions in our own latin alphabet, but at all times remained true to the core concept of using the painted words themselves as the subject matter.

The intention of Sami's calligraphy is not to be "read" or "figured out." Its purpose is to be a focus of quiet reflection integrated by the viewer into the rhythms of his own dreams for his life and service.
